The Sun Loves You, But Hates Your Designer Bags

The sun. I love it. And when I say I love it, I mean I F* love it. I can’t live without it. Two grey days in a row? I’m already mentally packing my bags and booking a flight somewhere warm. If it’s 4 degrees outside but sunny? You’ll still catch me sipping my matcha on a terrace, wrapped in a coat, pretending it’s summer.

But there’s a problem. I also love bags. And bags? They hate the sun.

I never realized how bad the sun is for handbags until I learned the hard way. I had a small square Chanel in red patent leather (okay, worst material for sun exposure), and I left it on a side table in my bedroom for just a few days. Not weeks, days. Guess what? It was completely discolored. I cried. I couldn’t use it anymore, and NO ONE was going to buy my sad, little, tanned bag. Bye-bye investment piece, hello liability. And worst of all? It wasn’t even cute anymore.

Your Bags Need SPF Too

We bag lovers know a lot about handbags, but we are seriously undereducated when it comes to sun damage.Honestly? I’m more afraid of the sun than rain when it comes to my bags.

You wear SPF on your skin, right? Well, leather needs SPF too. No, don’t start slathering your Chanel with your coconut-scented sunscreen. I mean proper protection. That’s exactly why I created a UV protector for handbags.Because I was tired of twisting into weird Pilates positions just to keep my bag out of the sun while sitting on a terrace.

And it’s not just about discoloration. The sun dries out leather, making it crack. And yes, it happens, and yes, it’s the absolute worst.

I hear you thinking, Pff, that’s a lot of effort for a bag. Weak excuse, honey. It’s actually super easy. After cleaning your bag, just apply a conditioner with UV protection (which, surprise, mine has). Depending on how often you use the bag, you’ll need to repeat the process to keep it protected.

And before you get too excited, this is a protector, not a shield. You still tan with SPF on, right? Same logic. Don’t be irresponsible with your bags.
